Using Roamer as a Base for the Creative Design of Exciting Robots

Roamer is a Turtle type robot: its main focus is using robots to help students understand important ideas.  Lego type robots focus on students learning by building robots.  Of course, once they’ve built the robot you can use for some Turtle-type tasks.  However, you wouldn’t spend 20 minutes building a robot to help students understand, for example, the nature of polygons.  Using Roamer ”straight out of the box” is a better way to manage classroom time.  Yet you can use Roamer to support arts and crafts, and engineering design.  We created Roamer as a simple shape so you could use it as a platform to design and make your own robot creation.  It serves as a way to engage students as well as giving them the chance to engage in creative arts and crafts as well as engineering tasks.  You’ll also find strong psychological and educational reasons for including this in some of your lesson plans.  This section aims to introduce you to some of the ideas and techniques for using Roamer in this way.

What Does a Robot Look Like?

How a robot looks depends on the why it exists.  You wouldn’t expect a robot nurse to look anything like a fearsome robot soldier.  Should a robot policeman look terrifying, like Robocop, or perhaps reassuring.  Motivation also influences robot design.  We often think of robots as bits of technology: that’s inaccurate.  In 1920 Karel Capek used the work in his play Rossum’s Universal Robots.  “Robot” is the Czech word for slave worker and the drama is about humanoid factory machines that rebel.  Before then almost every culture had myths, legends, and stories of sticks, mud and machines coming to life.  Every culture had a tradition of puppet theatre.  The idea of robots run much deeper than technology, they belong to art and culture.  Allowing children to create their own robot presents a wonderful chance for them to express both technical and artistic flair.
